The evolution of the violin – part 2

The Stroh violin was invented by August Stroh at the end of the 19th century and became famous at the early beginning of the 20th. Due to the fact that for the first two models created he did not obtain a pattent (just because he did not apply for one), his work was copied by some other luthiers at the time.

This violin became famous because of its different shape, because the musicians found it inappropriate for the compositions of Mozart, Bach or Beethoven. Why? Because the sound given by it is closer to the one needed in a music band. In Romania, this violin is used especially in Bihor region.

According to a study having as main purpose the geographic localisation of the musical instruments, the Stroh violin was found mostly in the East side of Hungary. It is told that the gypsies brought it to Romania and used it in their bands.

Some of the researchers believe that this type of violin was used in Romania before being patented by Stroh, but unfortunately there is no evidence of the fact that some Romanian luthiers that might have created it.

In Romania, aceasta vioara este utilizata mai ales in zona Bihorului.
